Reviews
William Blake lived from 1757 to1827.Although Blake was considered mad by contemporaries for his idiosyncratic views, he is held in high regard by later critics...Reverent of the Bible but hostile to the Church of England (indeed, to all forms of organised religion), Blake was influenced by the ideals and ambitions of the French and American Revolutions. Though later he rejected many of these political beliefs, he maintained an amiable relationship with the political activist Thomas Paine; he was also influenced by thinkers such as Emanuel Swedenborg....He made only 7 engravings for The Inferno in 1826-7 before his death. On her death [his wife], Blake's manuscripts were inherited by Frederick Tatham, who burned some he deemed heretical or politically radical. Tatham was an Irvingite, one of the many fundamentalist movements of the 19th century, and opposed to any work that smacked of blasphemy. John Linnell erased sexual imagery from a number of Blake's drawings. The above I extracted from Wikipedia's article on Blake. Since there was not a word about the artist in the book, I thought I'd add some tidbits here. The images in the book are clean and clear and display well on my Kindle, but there is no index, so, you make your own using the Kindle 'notes' feature as you progress through the book.Wiki's article explains Blake's inspiration by the bible and his eccentric views about religion and what happened to the subjects weiners. So, buy the book and enjoy the art of a great and influential artist/engraver.
